Five Ways To Move Closer To the Career Of Your Dreams

by admin on October 19, 2007

Inside all of us is a career that we think is unattainable. We think that it is too far-fetched to consider going after that one career that we dream about at night. Some of us are in that career, but many of us are on the outside looking in when it comes to being in the career of our dreams. My philosophy is that having your dream career become a reality is easier than you may think. Here are five steps to getting closer to that career that may change your life.

  1. First, you need to clearly identify what specific career you want to go after. Prioritize the things in this world that make you most excited, and then write down specific careers that coincide with those passions.
  2. Get Educated. Sometimes the career that you really want requires a specific degree or certification. Do not be discouraged if the career you are going after requires this. You can still work full-time and take classes at night and on the weekends. Check out your local community and state college for programs that fit the career you want to pursue. Next, take on a second job to stash away a pile of cash to pay for your tuition. If you are serious about this, you don’t want to start out too far in the negative to obtain your dream career.
  3. Put together a five year plan for making the transition to your new career. This plan can be a little less like 2 to 3 years, but don’t assume that you are going to quit your job tomorrow and go for it. This would be silly, especially if you have a family to think about that depends on your income. Clearly define the steps that it will take for you to be in a position to transition to your new career.
  4. Begin networking with other people in the career field that you are seeking. Join local community clubs, churches, and other organizations to start networking with those that are in the field you are seeking. Knowing the right people can help you get your foot in the door of a new position.
  5. Get your family on board to support you through your transition. Changing careers is not an easy task. You will need support through these times, because there will be some snags along the way. You may be rejected by companies or if your dream is starting a new business, you may not see the fruit of your labors for quite some time. Make sure that your family understands this, and rely on them for moral support.
