Becoming Successful Starts With Overcoming The Fear of Failure

If you have never checked out the blog, Career Ramblings, go browse around the site right now. They have a thoughtful article titled, Personal Success Is a State of Mind. The title sounds a little cliche, but they make some very good points. I agree with their thesis that the only thing holding you back from being successful in your career is you. We are too content with being average. We take for granted our value in the work place and the free marketplace. We take for granted that we have the opportunity at any moment to start our own business from scratch. We have the ability at any given moment to walk into our bosses office and fight for a promotion or raise. Pure capitalism allows us to do these things, but so many of us do not take the opportunity. However, fear of failure and fear of the unknown keep us from maximizing our ability. Why are we so afraid of failure? Is it because society tells us to be perfect? That’s ridiculous. Every successful business person or expert in their field has failed numerous times. The difference is that they learned a great deal from their failures, and they did not allow those failures to destroy their motivation to succeed.

Think about this for the remainder of the week. You are one opportunity away from making more money, enjoying what you love to do, and reducing the stress in your life. Have you identified any opportunities that are staring you in the face? Have you denied working in a field that you love just because of the income? Have you stopped working hard, because you can’t stand what you do? Take a broader look at your life and the people involved in it. Write down five possible opportunities that could help you change your career or increase your income. Then, come up with a plan for taking advantage of those opportunities.
