Think about this question over the weekend and post your response in the comment section. Have a safe weekend!
Would you rather have a safe, secure job that paid you regularly or would you rather have the opportunity and resources to start your own business?
The only stipulation is that the safe job would guarantee that you never get fired and always make enough money to pay your bills, and the business opportunity would have the chance of making you a multi-millionaire but also have the chance of making you go bankrupt?
What would you choose and why?

I am in the transition from having extreme job security to a my own start-up with a great plan, great team but no finances and no knowing what tomorrow will hold. You can’t get ahead without taking risks, but as the conversation has been going, this lifestyle of all night hours, little pay and crazy uncertainty is not for everyone!
Interested to see what others think.

I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, so if I had to choose one or the other, I would have to choose the latter option. I’m not afraid to fail, and really, if bankruptcy is the worst that could happen then I think I’d be OK. There are hundreds of ways to get by in this world, and I’m certain I could find one of them.
That said, I currently have the “safe job” but am exercising my entrepreneurial spirit with my web sites and side income. I’m not sure if it will ever be a full-time venture, but I have a lot of fun with it and I earn decent money with it.
I guess I am right in the middle, and that is fine too.

I’m in the same boat as Patrick, a full-time job with some nice side ventures.
The one thing I would add though is that I don’t think there is any such thing as a totally secure job. I have always thought my job is as secure as they come, but with new owners and the shaky economy, who knows?
Given that reality, I would much prefer to be in control of my own income rather than reliant upon an employer.

I am in the same boat! I’m right in the middle, but i’m hoping to be able to dump the day job at some point when my entrepreneurial endeavors can supplement my current income.

Hey Erik, I’d have to go with ’start your own business’… really it’s always been the resources aspect that has slowed me down - I just don’t feel comfortable dropping what I have now without a launching pad to start from.

I’m with Greg, don’t talk all about how magical it is to have your own business until you feel the pressure on your own skin. Sure, there is the grand payoff if you succeed, but until you get there it is stress like you wouldn’t believe. What would I choose? I think the young are arrogant, so probably I would choose to have my own startup like I do now. Maybe later in life I would choose the security. I don’t see them as mutually exclusive, though. People in Denmark and Sweden can still start businesses if they want and they don’t have to give up their kids having dental care.
