I was watching Good Morning America this morning, and they had the two teenagers on the show that started Cellphones for Soldiers. It’s basically a non-profit charity that has now partnered up with AT&T, and you can give your old phone to AT&T and they will turn it into Recellular, a company that pays them for the old phone, and they turn that revenue into prepaid minutes for soldiers to call home to their families. I’m sure you’ve seen these kids on The View or the Evening News, but this was the first time I saw them on television. These kids for 12 years old when they started this non-profit organization. Their charity might not be as busy when the war ends, but there will always be soldiers abroad defending our country whether at a time of war or peace.

This should be an inspiration to all of us that starting your own business does not have to be a for-profit business. Finding your passion doesn’t need to have eight zeroes at the end of it. In fact, you can probably still pay yourself a nice salary while doing something as worthy of a cause as Cellphone for Soldiers. It only takes one idea to make it a reality. I would encourage you as you think of your career choice or career transition to consider starting a non-profit organization. The paperwork is probably mind-numbing, but you will fulfill purpose, passion, and a reason to wake up every day and go to work.
