Who is this Millenial Generation? If you have a facebook account, have ever posted something on YouTube, daydream about starting your own business, or you could eat cereal for all three meals, then you’re probably a part of the Millenial Generation. From what I have found from having a “real” job for the past two and a half years is that our generation is not concerned with security. We don’t care about if the paycheck comes in like clock work. Why? Because the work force is changing, and if you don’t identify the way that the work force is changing, then you’ll be left in the dust.
The old American dream of our parent’s generation was getting a good job at a big corporation that would take care of them until they depart from this world. The Millenial Generation has no faith in private corporations or the government taking care of them. They put their faith in themselves to control their future. We no longer live in a nation where plugging into an assembly line is valuable. Information is king. The more you know, the more valuable you are. There is a machine out there that is more efficient and productive than you’ll ever be, so stop chasing after careers that are becoming obsolete. Stop chasing after a paycheck. Start chasing a career that offers a limitless amount of income and multiple streams of income.
So, why aren’t young people motivated by a paycheck anymore? Because they hate the idea of being confined to a fixed income. If you’re 25 years old and starting a new career, are you satisfied with getting a paycheck every two weeks or do you want more? Do you hate the idea that an employer dictates how much money you make? Of course you do, because you live in a new era of doing business. You live in an era where you can start a blog for virtually free and make money from it. You can sell virtual real estate in virtual worlds like Second Life. You can have an eight to five job, and do consulting work on the side. Knowledge is valuable. Information is king.
What are you doing to create multiple streams of income for yourself? What are you doing to become more knowledgeable in your career field? Strive for more than just a paycheck. Strive to be your own business. Don’t let getting fired be the downward spiral of your financial life. If you’re income is residual rather than fixed, you’ll find that you’re doing something that you love, and the decisions that other people make will not affect you they way they affect others.
